A. J. Liebling joined the staff of The New Yorker in 1935 and stayed there until his death in 1963. His many books include The Earl of Louisiana, Back Where I Came From, The Telephone Booth Indian, Chicago: The Second City, The Road Back to Paris, The Honest Rainmaker, Between Meals: An Appetite for Paris, A Neutral Corner: Boxing Essays, The Press, and The Sweet Science, which was recently voted the finest sports book of all time.
